BAY HORSE HISTORY

The Bay Horse Pub, Clifford was built in 1624 by a roaming band of vagabond gypsies. All the stone, wood and lime cement used in the pub's construction, were stolen from Kirby's and brought up Clifford beck, in purpose built longboats to the site. It took these true dimwitted neanderthals 9 months to finish the building works but rumour has it, even all those years ago, they still managed to install a better Satellite TV System than the one which is currently in use in the pub today. The only evidence remaining from the 1600's which can be found in the pub today is the jukebox and most of its contents, the fruit machine, the payphone, the electric wiring, the false real-look roof beams, the ornaments, the pictures which adorn the original wallpapered walls and the Romanian rat-hair carpet.

In the 1700's the Bay Horse became quite a den of iniquity where criminals from all over the country used to bring and sell their ill-gotten wares. Some say, in those days, if you placed a penny on the bar it would run up hill, this was bollocks because as soon as the penny left your pocket, some bastard would rob it. During this period you could get anything in the Bay Horse your hearts desired from hooky Hugo Boss cloaks to knocked off Nike winklepickers to the very latest blockbuster movies on Betamax, prior to there official release dates.

Around the 1750's, spider wrestling was the big thing before fantasy football. It was an illegal pastime enjoyed by the local Clifford peasents and many a memorable bout was held at the Bay Horse Pub. Many pension queues around the village, to this day, still buzz with memories of some of the great fighters, such as, Incy Wincy Bastard and Big Daddy Eight Legs.

A big depression swept through Clifford and the surrounding areas in 1805. This saw the local villagers heading to Morrisons and B&Q in search of food and tools. Most were unable to pay the exceedingly high prices demanded by the Costcutter and Dougie Yeadons at Boston Spa, which stocked all the same stuff at almost the same price. (But not quite as cheap). Few peasents therefore, had enough money to frequent the Bay Horse for a few pints of mead.

The owner of the pub at that time, stumbled upon a cunning plan and started stocking Carlsberg lager bottles. He began offering his peasent customers a bottle of Carlsberg for 1 groat as an alternative to the 2 groat 30 scheckle cost of a pint. Everyone was happy, the customer thought he had a great deal and the landlord was also made up because he knew that most customers drunk 3 bottles in the same time they would a pint and with its piss-weak strength, he could offload at least 20 bottles to each punter before they went home. This tradition continues to the present day.

Today, The Bay Horse, Clifford is not only reknowned around the world for its very handsome men but also for its Al Jazeerah TV and it's website which probably gets as many visitors each day as the ones who walk through the door of the actual boozer.

Here stands the history of one of Britain's best loved public houses. Why not pay a visit and help us write the next chapter!
